Lurgan RF&CC’s Building Positive Relations programme has been awarded ‘Project of the Year’ by Sport NI as part of their SportMaker Awards 2020.
Delivered in partnership with St Peters GAA Club and Eire Og GAA Club, the SEUPB Peace IV funded programme focuses on using sport, namely Rugby football and Gaelic football, as the vehicle for engagement and education of children and young people from deprived and divided areas in Lurgan.
Across an 18 month period, the club hosted shared sports sessions, events, festivals, training and education workshops, and various other interactive community relations activities in a bid to enhance cohesion and understanding among those from different religious and political backgrounds.
Club PRO Raymond Acheson commented:
“We are honoured and delighted to receive this award from Sport NI. Our Building Positive Relations project has made a real and lasting change to the lives of all those who have taken part. We are continually working to promote the opportunities which sport brings to address reconciliation issues and overcome the feelings of distrust which affect our community. This award is recognition for all of our hard work, and the project has built the foundations for us to further grow and expand our peace related activities for the benefit of those living in Lurgan and the surrounding catchment”.
