Ulster A 12 Leinster A 61

Ulster A

Leinster A eased to victory over Ulster A in a challenge game at CIYMS RFC, Belfast, on Friday evening.

On a bitterly cold but dry evening the visitors quickly put themselves in front in the 3rd minute when centre Jimmy O’Brien made a neat break then sent scrum half Hugh O’Sullivan clear to score. Tim Corkery added the extras for a 0-7 lead.

Indiscipline from Ulster followed when hooker Zack McCall tip tackled Leinster’s Ryan Baird close to the Ulster line in 15th minute. McCall was yellow carded and the Leinster men struck twice in the following 10 minute period. First flanker Sean O’Brien smashed his way over or an unconverted try and this was followed by a similar effort from the impressive second row Oisin Dowling. This third try was converted by Corkery taking the visitors 0-19 clear.

Ulster hit back in the 33rd minute after scrum half Lewis Finlay created room out wide for Luke Pollock to force his way over in the left hand corner. Bruce Houston added the extras from the touchline to make it 7-19.

Leinster crossed for their 4th try of the evening in the 39th minute following sustained pressure on the Ulster line which eventually saw scrum half Hugh O’Sullivan dart over close to the posts. Corkery added the extras to take the Leinster men into a 7-26 half-time lead.

Ulster struck first in the second half when flanker Marcus Rea stormed clear on the Leinster 22 and managed to make the line for an unconverted try.

Leinster immediately hit back with a great effort from fullback Cian Kelleher which was converted by Corkery.

With 15 minutes of the second half gone the Leinster skipper Scott Penny smashed his way clear and crossed for a 6th Leinster try which Corkery converted.

It was all one-way traffic to the finish as Ulster coughed up a loose pass in the midfield which Jimmy O’Brien picked up to race clear, Corkery’s extra 2 points, making it 12-47.

Replacement scrum half Patrick Patterson worked his magic from the base of a midfield scrum to send centre Jimmy O’Brien clear again for his second try.

Leinster’s final score came when Ulster were penalised from going over the top at a ruck. Scrum half Patrick Patterson took a quick tap and scampered clear to score. Corkery’s extra 2 making the final score 12-61 to Leinster.
