Birch was educated at RS Armagh and after a number of seasons in the Ulster Academy, was handed a full contract in 2012.
His demonstrated impressive club form for Dungannon and also stood out for the Ravens on many occasions. He then made his competitive debut for the senior side in the 2010 Magners League clash with Connacht.
He is not the biggest back row player but he combines an excellent work rate with sheer speed to cause chaos around the park. His ball carrying ability and ferocity at ruck time will be big bonuses for Ulster in seasons to come.
