The Scarlet's organised forwards piled on the pressure with a succession of well times passes that that enables Darren Daniel to break away from the Ulster defence to cross the white wash after 14 minutes for the only try of the evening. Jones added his 2points to the scoreboard as his side extended their lead to Ulster 0 v Llanelli Scarlets 10.
Ulster kept their work rate high and as both team struggled to create scoring opportunities the next points came in the form of two penalty decisions for Ulster in the 23rd and 26th minute. New Signing Clinton Schifcofske , who stood out during Ulster's pre-season friendlies for his accuracy and control of the game was on target for both attempts putting 6 points on the scoreboard for Ulster.
For the remaining 15 minutes of the first half both sides locked into a stalemate with play rarely moving far from the half way line. Ulster eventually gained the upper hand and slowly surged to the Scarlets touch but were unable to capitalise as play was stopped by the referee to award a penalty kick for Llanelli players coming in from the side. In the dying minutes of the first half Schifcofske clocked up another 3 points with his 3rd successful kick of the night.
Half time score Ulster 9 v Scarlets 10
Ulster were put under pressure from early on in the second half as the Scarlets extended their lead after with another penalty kick, a further penalty from Stephen Jones just 3 minutes later was just wide and hit the post to keep the score Ulster 9 v Scarlets 13.
The conditions kept play slow with neither side able to clock up any further points until the visitors were granted another penalty kick to which Jones slotted to bring the score line to Ulster 9 v Llanelli 16. Play continued deep into Ulster's 22 but the side's defence held strong and the Scarlets were unable to ground the ball- despite the scum passing over the touchline.
Ulster's best scoring opportunity of the night came just too late to clinch the draw. With over 2 minutes of injury time on the clock a hard tackle to intercept the ball from Llanelli defence stole possession and was picked up by Tom Court. Court was just short of the touchline before the Scarlets attempt to clear the ball was met by Andrew Trimble who fed back to Schifcofske to bring the Ravenhill crowd to their feet but the ball was knocked out of play before the final whistle blew leaving the score Ulster 9 v Llanelli Scarlets 16.
