The Ulster Ravens secured their British and Irish Cup semi-final place with a comprehensive 62-0 victory over Aberavon at Ravenhill, running in ten tries in the process.
The Ravens knew that a victory would be good enough to secure them a semi final place in this competition and they made the perfect start to this contest in the 4th minute when a great chip through at the posts was gathered by the Aberavon out half Jamie Davies, but as he carried the ball across his line the Welsh man was tackled by Tommy Seymour. The Ravens winger did really well to wrestle the ball clear for Ian Whitten to pounce on it just before the dead ball line. Niall O'Connor added the extras to give the Ravens an early 7-point lead.
The home side always looked dangerous and took every opportunity to run the ball. A kickable penalty in the 18th minute was dispatched into the right hand corner by O'Connor to set up a catch and drive. Neil McComb took the catch, and when the Ravens hit the second drive Declan Fitzpatrick did well to force his way over for try number two. O'Connor added the conversion to take the Ravens 14 points clear.
The Welsh men were finding the Ulstermen hard to handle at the breakdown resorting to persistent infringements as they tried to prevent the Ravens from getting quick ball. As the penalty count increased O'Connor never looked at the posts but continued to pepper the corner flag. In the 27th minute another catch and drive put number 8 Robbie Diack clear down the blind side, and he crossed in the left hand corner for the third Ravens try, which went unconverted to leave the home side with a 19-0 advantage.
The persistent infringements continued after the restart, and referee Pearce had no alternative but to send the Aberavon number 8 Rory Gallagher to the sin bin for 10 minutes. From the penalty the Ravens kicked for the right hand corner where Diack collected the throw in from touch. The ball was flashed wide with Scott La Valla smashing into the Aberavon defence in front of the posts. Cillian Willis wasted no time in moving the ball wide where Michael Allen showed a neat bit of skill to slip past a defender then pass outside where Bryn Cunningham was on hand as part of a three man overlap, and he had a simple task to set the ball down for the bonus point try which went unconverted leaving the Ravens a 24 point lead.
As the first half came to a conclusion the Ravens struck again. With 3 minutes remaining Aberavon had their flanker Darryl Thomas yellow carded when he deliberately prevented Willis from making a pass. Willis then tried to take a quick tap penalty but was held up over the line. With a solid platform from the resultant 5-metre scrum the home eight start to trundle forward towards the visitors line. Willis picked up for a snipe round the side but he was again repelled only this time the weight of the Ravens pack got behind their scrum half and with a counter-drive he was pushed over for the fifth try of the evening. This time O'Connor was accurate with his conversion to take the Ravens into a commanding 31-0 lead at halftime.
The Ravens wasted no time in settling into the second half, with just five minutes played, a break by Andi Kyriacou down the right wing put Tommy Seymour clear, the young winger crossing for the sixth Ravens try which was converted by O'Connor to take the home sides tally to 38 points.
Two minutes later Seymour crossed for his second try after quick ball was moved wide with some slick passing from Michael Allen putting the winger clear, and he dived over for try number seven. O'Connor failed to convert leaving the Ravens 43-0 in front.
Michael Allen was next to score in the 52nd minute; a high ball was taken in the midfield and moved to the right. Bryan Young found himself in the middle of the backline, but to his credit he gave a neat pass wide to Seymour who straightened the attack cutting through the Welsh defence, making good ground before passing outside to Allen who out paced the cover to run in behind the posts. O'Connor added the conversion taking the Ravens tally to 50 points.
Things didn't get much better for the visitors, after the restart they lost the services of the skipper Liam Gadd for a high tackle. The Ravens made sure their extra man advantage counted, with 18 minutes still to go Cillian Willis put Mark McCrea clear to go over for the ninth try of the evening after a long period of pressure in the Aberavon 22. O'Connor failed to convert leaving the Ravens 55 points in front.
With 11 minutes remaining the visitors thought they had scored when their winger Chris Lewis intercepted to sprint clear, but the referee blew for offside. The final score of the evening came in the 72nd minute when replacement Ian Humphreys had too much pace for the beleaguered Welsh defence and he raced round behind the posts to set down with O'Connor converting to complete the scoring, the Ravens tally having reached 62 points.
