The 2008/09, the second award of £2000 was made to Ian Whitten. Receiving his award, Ian stated, "I would like to thank the URSC; the money will be a great help to me to continue my studying and will go towards my university fees. To win this award that has Dr Jack Kyle's endorsement, is a great honour."
Iain Campbell, Chairman of the URSC said, "We are delighted that the 2008/09 Bursary has been awarded to Ian Whitten. The Supporters' Club has gone from strength to strength over the past few years, and we feel the Bursary is an appropriate way by which we can demonstrate our support for Ulster Rugby in a very tangible and practical way."
"Ulster Rugby believes that Ian has a big future in the game and we hope that our Bursary will encourage him to greater heights. Indeed, it is entirely appropriate that Ian should start his first game for Ulster (against Portugal) in the same week has he receives this award. We will follow his performances with greater interest!"
Iain added "We are also delighted that the Ulster Rugby Supporters' Club Bursary will include the name of the Club's President Dr Jack Kyle. We have been honoured to have a genuine legend of the game as our President over the past few years and thrilled that he has agreed to giving his name to our annual Bursary."
Academy High Performance Manager Gary Longwell had this to say, "Ian is very deserving of this award. He has the talent and application to make it as a top rugby player. As these young guys try to develop their skills and follow a university course, it can be very difficult to keep the balance right. Other students can get part-time jobs, but the time constraints of this are not consistent with performing and living the athletic lifestyle and this URSC bursary will be a big help to Ian."
