Ards U17s v Virginia U17s
Ards sustained a barrage of attacks from Virginia before eventually touching the ball via effective counter rucking. This enabled them to kick clear and put the ball into touch. The ensuing lineout saw a good break from the Virgina centres but the attack ended in a penalty to Virginia. Kevin Mulveny, the number ten for Virginia, stepped up to the mark, and with a neat kick ensured the visitors were rewarded for the early efforts.
From the restart, Virginia attacked, and their centres caused all sorts of problems for the Ards defence. However, Ards conceded another penalty and again Kevin Mulvey made good. Ards responded with a good passage of play, with their forwards making ground to release the backs only to be brought down with some strong tackles at the last moment. Virginia were outstanding at the breakdown getting to their feet and stealing lots of ball.
The second half saw Virginia come back strongly. While Ards took the pressure well, once again over- eagerness at the breakdown resulted in a penalty. Kevin Mulvey increased the lead to 9 points to nil. Ards began chasing the game and the resulting pressure to the rucks gave the backs time to impose their speed and run lines. During one of these spells Virginia were caught 'hands in ruck' by referee Stephen Green, resulting in a penalty for Ards. Andy Savage slotted the ball between the points. Ards tried to close the gap in the remaining time and were even held up over the line at one stage. But Virginia defence ensured that this was the only time Ards crossed the line. Final score: Ards 3 : Virgina 9.
