Girls' Schools' Cup 2008/09

No ALT tag specified

The 2009 Girls' Schools' Cup saw around 30 schools take part from all over the province. The girls of Enniskillen Collegiate faced Antrim GS in the final, each competing for the prestigious title. Congratulations to Enniskillen Collegiate who took home the trophy after a closely contested final.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Girls' Rugby has developed into one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Over the last few years Tag Rugby has been introduced to numerous schools around the province. Due to the continued growth and success of Tag Rugby in secondary schools, a "Girls' Schools Rugby Initiative" was proposed to link in with this previous scheme. This competition will involve school areas in Ulster that will participate in the Tag Rugby Programme as well as well as schools that have not had the opportunity to participate in previous IRFU Schemes.

WHY GET INVOLVED?

Girls Schools Rugby-
• Is a fast and exciting non- contact game of Touch Rugby, encouraging the development of running, balancing and handling skills.

• Is a very flexible sport that can be played by any number of players and the pitch can be increased and reduced accordingly.

• Can be played on a variety of surfaces.

SAFETY IN GIRLS' SCHOOLS RUGBY

The modified laws (no tackling, pushing in the scrum or jumping in the lineout) enable girls to play in a variety of positions; learning the running and passing skills of a backline player, as well as the positioning, tactics and skills of a forward player. Playing sport places physical demands on girls and the teaching of skills and laws in preparation for competition is essential for enjoyment and safe participation.

PROGRESSION LADDER

In this game of modified rugby, players become well versed in the fundamentals of running and ball handling. The next step for players would be to introduce physical contact. This is introduced in the safe environment of the local rugby club. Physical contact occurs when the ball is stopped with a tackle, and when scrums and lineouts are contested.
