The schools were split into three pools, with pool A consisting of Wellington College, Aquinas Grammar, Antrim Grammar and Larne High School. Pool B was Grosvenor Grammar, Rainey Endowed and Victoria College. Pool C was Coleraine High School, Larne Grammar and Rathmore Grammar. Each team played the other teams in their pool, with the winner of each pool going into the semi finals with the overall runner up being the fourth team in the semi finals.
During the group stages, pool A seen Aquinas take the lead, with some great rugby. With 3-2, 3-0 and 6-0 wins over Antrim, Wellington and Larne H.S. Aquinas were definitely promised a place in the semi final and in pool B Grosvenor dominate their pool with 8-0 and 8-4 wins over Rainey and Victoria, securing them a place in the semis finals. In the final pool Larne Grammar clinched their semi final place with 8-1 and 10-6 wins over Coleraine H.S. and Rathmore. This meant that only one more team would have that all important fourth place in the semi finals. This went to Antrim Grammar as they had the most runners up points at the end of the pool stages.
Although they never qualified for the semi final stages credit has to go to Larne High school, as they played very well for their first time in the competition and only having three training sessions.
With the final underway, Grosvenor pushed forward early, with some great running rugby but they were held up by Larne’s tight defence. This wasn’t for long as Grosvenor regrouped and with some quick passing they managed to creep through Larne’s defence to score the first try of the finals. It wasn’t long until Larne were fighting back and keeping Grosvenor’s defence on their toes. Larne kept pushing forward until they found that all important gap in the defence and grabbed their first try to equalise the score. Both teams pushed on looking for that all important score, and it was the Belfast Girls who found the gap in the defence which turned out to be the winning try.
Big thanks to all the Eastern teams who took part and congratulations to Grosvenor Grammar who have made it to the finals which will be held at Ravenhill on 24th March 2010 against the winners of the Western Regional finals which will be held on the 11th march 2010.
