Letterkenny and Enniskillen battled it out in the playoffs where there was a great display of attacking rugby from both teams. Enniskillen showed more flare and experience with some great handling by their backs to seal a fantastic win, credit must be given to both teams who have progressed immensely after only starting up this season.
An eagerly awaited final between Cooke and City of Derry did not disappoint, Cooke looked rattled from early pressure from Derry who showed great power in their forwards dominating up front. Cooke seemed to settle and find their form mid way through the first half which resulted in a brilliant try from young centre Emma Rea. Lack of discipline gave Derry the chance to put their first score on the board with outhalf Rachel Lennox kicking the points. Cooke scored another well worked try, however after another penalty by Lennox the half time score line was much closer than expected. A firm half time team talk by the Cooke coaches seemed to boost the players as they looked much hungrier for the match, playing some great continuity rugby which lead to three more scores in the second half. Despite this Derry dug deep and showed their fighting spirit as they threatened the Cooke line on several occasions. The Cooke defence however held strong with several players making huge try saving tackles. The final whistle blew with Cooke winning 33-9 and bringing home the Rosie Stewart Cup for the 3rd consecutive time. The Trophy was presented by Rosie’s mum to the Cooke Captain Catherine Maguire. Cooke were delighted to retain the trophy in memory of Rosie as many of her teammates and friends still play in the squad.
Ulster Branch Women’s Development Officer Joy Sparkes summed up the day: “ It was a great day for women’s rugby in the Province, congratulations must go to all teams involved. Rosie was a very special team mate and friend, one who worked tirelessly for the game. I’m sure if she was here today she would have been extremely proud at how much the game has developed throughout the years. It’s a fitting tribute to her that Cooke won, however being born and bred in Derry I think she may have been a little undecided on who to support today.”
