Letterkenny Overcome Virginia To Claim The Cup
15 April 2008, 10:07 am
By Maire Cahill
Sunday last saw two teams make rugby history, competing in the first ever Ulster Final for U18 girls
Letterkenny RFC and Virginia RFC went head to head in Armagh for the chance to take home the Cup. Both teams, who have been on top all season, displayed a very high standard of rugby, pushing themselves to the limit in a very tightly contested game.

Letterkenny made some strong attacks in the first half, forcing Virginia back into their own twenty-two. Laura Feely made a strong run at the line but was held up by a strong Virginia defence, forcing Letterkenny to retreat to a scrum. A penalty just before the half time whistle gave Letterkenny the chance to “kick for post”, an opportunity well taken by Elaine Melaugh, leaving the half time score 3-0 to Letterkenny.

Both teams came out strong in the second half with some hard tackles and strong play. Virginia, making crucial ground, pushed Letterkenny backwards, and some good handling from the forwards out to the back line sent the winger across the line with a try, which was converted, with just ten minutes left in the game. Never the less, Letterkenny came out shouting, and a quickly taken penalty sent Donna McGinley on the run from the half way line to score a try in an impressive 60 second come back.  The try was then converted by Elaine Melaugh.

Letterkenny held the 10-7 score line until the final whistle, claiming the title they had been fighting for all season.  The team gave an impressive performance under the excellent management of Teresa Dunn, Clodagh Mc Cool and Reg Dunn, proudly taking the Ulster Cup home to Donegal.

The team would like to take this opportunity to thank all family members and friends who showed their continuous support all season.
