The Army Prove Too Strong For Ulster Women

Match report: Army 10- 0 Ulster Women
On Wednesday 27th February the Ulster Women’s Team played against a very strong and powerful Army team at Shaws Bridge, Belfast. The Army Team are currently finalising their preparations for the annual inter-services tournament and were using the game against Ulster as a final warm-up.

Ulster, due to injury and unavailability, showed a number of changes from the squad that had played in the inter-provincial series in October with 5 players coming into the match squad for the first time. The home team started well dominating the early possession and territory but were unable to finish off a number of early breaks which saw them get behind the well marshalled Army defence.  After 9 mins The Army capitalised on an Ulster error and moved the ball quickly through the back line giving their left winger enough space to round the Ulster defence and score close to the posts.  With the conversion missed the home team set about restoring their dominance.

From the restart Ulster kicked deep into the Army half and set about pressuring the visitors.  For the next 30 mins Ulster dominated the proceedings with the scrum on top and the lineout providing a constant supply of ball for the backline.   Just as Ulster were awarded a very kickable penalty and looked to be getting rewarded for their efforts, the touch judge intervened and the play was brought back for an incident of foul play against the home team and their momentum was lost. During the first half Ulster lost winger Laura Nicholl through injury and she was replaced by Christine Robb. Half time score was Ulster 0, The Army 5.

The second half started in the same vein with Ulster pressuring the opposition but unfortunately not being able to score points.  As the game wore on The Army started to up the tempo and their greater physical presence up front started to provide more ball for their backline.  However  Ulster held firm and defended their line until the 65th  min when after a series of 5m scrums the Army finally managed to crash over in the corner.  The conversion was missed. For the remainder of the game Ulster tried to move the ball at every opportunity but the Army were determined to hold out and in the end they won by 10pts to 0pts.

It would be unfair to single anyone out for praise as this was an excellent effort by all concerned especially considering that the team had only 2 sessions together before the game, but special mention must be made to the 5 debutants, especially  Prop Marty Ferron who started her first game for Ulster, Laura Johnston who came on at Hooker and the 3 City of Derry players Stacy Jackson, Miranda Vernon and Suzanne Tinney.

Credit should be given to the Army team for the way that they kept their composure during the game especially as they were under so much pressure in the first half.  The way that they kept their shape and discipline was a credit to them and their coaching staff.  They certainly appreciated the work-out that Ulster game them and they go into the Inter-Services competition filled with confidence.
