On arrival at Malone RFC, it looked like the girls should have packed their swimming costume and not their rugby kit as the 1st XV pitch was completely waterlogged! However, the 2nd pitch was fine so play went ahead.
Lisburn dominated early on with some good forward play which proved too much for the lighter Malone pack, leading finally to a good score out wide by the Lisburn 13. Full back Ashleigh Baxter made a good attempt at the conversion, but this sailed wide. Malone fought back with some very impressive attacking rugby and their defence was outstanding, keeping Lisburn from scoring just inches from their line.
The second half saw Malone emerge as the better side and as the Lisburn forwards tired, Malone pushed forward threatening to score. The Lisburn defence scrambled well, although the lack of reorganisation, and several poor tackles led to Malone scoring a very well earned try. Credit must be given to the Malone girls, especially their young fly half who showed great vision and handling skills to give an excellent pass to her centre partner to score. The conversion was successful to put the Malone girls 7-5 ahead. Lisburn heads dropped slightly after this, and despite an attempt to sneak that winning score, it was Malone who finished the stronger side with their number 10 breaking through the middle and running clear for a sore under the posts to win the match for Malone.
Elsewhere this weekend, various other U18 Youth League matches were played, the results of which are listed below:
