Donegal Town RFC was the host for the first ever girls contact rugby game between Enniskillen RFC and the Girls U18 County development squad.
The squad were using this game as a warm up for the up and coming Easter tour in which they will play two fixtures against established clubs in South Wales.  The skill levels on display were a credit to the girl’s commitment to training over the last 6 months and also a credit to the coaching team of Clodagh McCool, Teresa Dunne and Tony O’Callaghan. The major surprise to the spectators and coaching staff was the girl’s ability in the contact area with assertive tackling and off-loading out of the tackle. The open game certainly suited the Donegal team as they made several good breaks in the first half only to be stopped by some excellent Enniskillen defence.

After some intelligent off-loading skills by Aine Scott, Katy Herron, Danielle Gavigan, Nakita McCool and Elaine McLaugh Enniskillen forced a lineout five metres from there line. From the lineout Kelly McGirr was quick to pounce on the loose ball to score the first try from which Katy Heron was unlucky not to convert from a very wide angle. It was then the visitors who raised the game with some searching attacks through the midfield which were only halted by some strong tackling from Laura Feely, Marie McKelvey, Michelle Corrigan and Kerry-Lee Murray.  Enniskillen kept on the pressure which resulted in their impressive second row forward Megan McKenzie who went over in the corner to level the scores.

In the second half Donegal raised the effort by playing a more expansive game which brought their outside backs more into the play. Enniskillen were now under more pressure from some sharp breaks from Tereise O’ Callaghan Christine McCann and Janet Kerr but the break of the match came from pacey winger Ciara Gallen who broke several tackles to race away to a 70 metre try. The angle once again made it difficult for Heron to convert. It was Ciara Gallen again who had the last try of the game after a kick through from out half Katy Herron who this time was given an easier kick but unfortunately struck the post. The 15-5 score line was well deserved in this entertaining game. The girls will no doubt gain more experience on the tour to Wales in two weeks time.
