On Thursday 29th February, St. Colman’s College Newry took on their local counterparts, Abbey G.S. in a friendly U18 match organised by CRDO, Hamish Fraser. Despite strong winds and lashing rain, both teams displayed some very good rugby from the outset.

St Colman’s began with the wind at their backs and seemed to be playing all their rugby in Abbey’s territory; however, they were only able to get one score, a try from Jackson McEvoy. Although McEvoy, Andrew Storey and Connor Cole created good opportunities leading from the front for St. Colman’s, the Abbey defended their line well.

With only 5 points in difference, the Abbey looked certain to score, especially with the wind in their favour, however, they failed to anticipate the impressive St Colman’s side playing almost perfectly into the wind in the 2nd half. St. Clolman’s managed to keep the ball in hand, and showed great skill in the backline by keeping it simple and moving the ball through their hands. Dan Fearon was a constant threat to the Abbey and played a superb game.

St Colman’s continued to defend their line well and worked their way into the Abbey's half. Although they made a slight error and were driven back, they recovered well, and began to gain possession back up the field. It was during one of their ventures into the Abbey’s half that Jackson McEvoy crossed for his 2nd try to take the score to 10-0.

Jackson McEvoy displayed some excellent skill, scoring the only two tries of the game, and Sean Egan, Nicky Mills and scrumhalf, David Gilfedder were also to be commended for their strong performances. For the Abbey, Declan Price tackled well throughout the game and David Murphy proved a threat from out half.
