Minutes later the visitors missed the opportunity to put their first points on the scoreboard with Edinburgh fly half Phil Godman missing his fist penalty of the night. Ulster attacked heavily and created some good chances but it was Matt Dey who broke through the opposition defense and touched down for Edinburgh in the 24th minute, Godman converted for Edinburgh to take the lead, bringing the score to Ulster 5 Edinburgh 7. Roger Wilson left the pitch early into the first half with a suspected broken thumb.
The Edinburgh attack continued with Andrew Turbull scoring just 4 minutes after Dey with Godman converting to increase their lead on the home side. Ulster 5 Edinburgh 14. Goodman racked up a further 3 points before the break kicking his second penalty of the night on target to make the half time score Ulster 5- Edinburgh 17
Goodman again landed a long range penalty taking the score to 5-20 just 5 minutes after the restart.With both sides grappling for possession Paddy Wallace landed two Ulster penalties before the 64th minute when Kieran Campbell ran on the pitch to rapturous applause from the Ravenhill crowd as he earned his 100th cap for Ulster.
With the scoreboard at 11-20 the crowd roared encouragement at the Ulster side but both sides locked into a stalemate until, with 10 minutes remaining, Wallace clocked up his third penalty for Ulster however Edinburgh had done enough to clinch the victory.
