Despite this, Ulster started well and were 12 - 0 up on Llanelli after 23 minutes with two tries from wingers Tommy Bowe and Andrew Maxwell and a conversion from David Humphreys. However, shortly after Maxwell's score, Ulster captain Simon Best was stretchered off the field with an ankle injury and he was replaced by Justin Fitzpatrick.
Seven minutes later Ulster lost David Humphreys until the beginning of the second half when he was forced to leave the field to receive treatment after getting a clip round the eye which resulted in a couple of stitches. He was replaced temporarily by Jonny Bell with Paddy Wallace moving from centre to out-half.
The two injuries seemed to break Ulster's momentum and the Scarlets' prop Phil Jophn scored the first of his two tries on 39 minutes.

Llanelli came back strongly at the start of the second half which was only three minutes old when Ulster lost another player, this time Stephen Ferris to what appeared to be an ankle injury - no doubt due to the soft conditions underfoot. Ferris was replaced by Neil McMillan.
The highlight of the game for Llanelli came on 46 minutes when the forward pack controlled a line-out drive uyp alomost half of the pitch allowing man of the match Phil John to cross the line for his second try. Evans converted to put the two sides level on 12 points apiece.
And this was how the score would stay - although there was a moment of controversy when on 64 minutes the Llanelli players thought they had scored another try - the Scottish referee had gotten himself into a bad position and was knocked down and the on the touch judge's advice declare no try as the ball had been held up.
Ulster came back strongly towards the end of the match however were unable to add to their tally to secure the four points for a win. Humphreys, perhaps unsettled after his injury, missed a penalty on 62 minutes and had two drop goal attempts, one which hit the post on 75 minutes and one which went wide in the dying seconds of the game.
Ulster will take two points for the draw which puts them two points ahead of Leinster and at the top of the Celtic League table on 71 points. Both sides will play their final matches next Friday night and Ulster must defeat the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium to secure the title.
Post match Ulster Coach Mark McCall said, "It was a very touch match, Llanelli came back strongly in the second half and we had very few set pieces in their half although finished well", "for us to come here and not be beaten was an acheivement and I'm very proud of the players", "we can come back to Wales next week and win".
