Philip was educated at Grosvenor Grammar School and then completed two degrees at University of Ulster at Jordanstown. His first degree was a BA (Hons) in Sports Studies and his second was a MSC in Sports and Exercise Physiology.

Philip was the Ulster Academy Fitness Manager for a season and then moved onto the position of IRFU National Academy Fitness Manager for a season before starting employment with Ulster Rugby in 2003.

Philip, also known as "The Butcher" played hockey to a high level for a number of years and lists keeping fit and watching films as his favourite activities outside of work
