Developing Schools Blitz at Newry RFC
2 May 2008, 4:26 pm
By Maire Cahill
Abbey Christian Brothers, St Colman’s College & Shimna Integrated College reetly took part in an U18 15 a-side Blitz held at Newry RFC. Games lasted 15 minutes each way and each team played each other.
In the first game, St. Colman’s edged out their Newry Rivals, Abbey G.S. by 10 points to 3 in what was a tight game, with David Murphy opening the scoring an early penalty for the Abbey. Tommy McDonald responded to level the scores, before Jackson McEvoy broke the line from 45m out and outsprinted the defence to score. Tommy McDonald added the conversion.

In the second game the Abbey played Shimna in a very physical contest, with Shimna looking dangerous from the outset. It was however, the Abbey who scored first with a penalty to David Murphy. Abbey's defence held strong and they began to threaten the Shimna side. Dermot Mackey crashed over for a try with time almost up to leave the final score at 8-0 to the Abbey.

In the final game of the blitz, St Colmans ran out comfortable winners against Shimna, making them the overall winners on the day. The try scorers were Jackson McEvoy, Nicky Mills, Darren White and Dan Fearon; with Tommy McDonald kicking three conversions. The final score was 26-0

Darren White from St. Colman’s, who came on as a replacement, with next to no rugby experience, scored with his first ever touch, thanks to Nicky Mills’ generosity. For the Abbey, both David Murphy and Declan Price stood out, and for Shimna, Stephen Gordon, Chris Hanna and Cormac Nellis all played particularly well.

And finally, for the winners, St. Colman’s, Jackson McEvoy was outstanding, proving the difference between the two teams in the local Newry derby. Captain, Andrew Storey put in some big hits, while Tony O'Hare was strong in midfield. Tommy McDonald kicked well and got the backs going, while Dan Fearon and Nicky Mills were always dangerous.
