| The trip started early on the Thursday morning with a 7am arrival at Dublin Airport, followed by a visit to the North Coast, taking in the Giant's Causeway. Thursday evening was spent meeting their hosts in the Ballyclare clubhouse, before camping down in the function room on camp beds!
Friday morning began in traditional style with the touring team being treated a traditional Ulster Fry before embarking on a sightseeing and shopping trip to Belfast. That evening, the Exiles spent some time with the Ballyclare Youth players, taking in the sights and sounds of Ballyclare.
A match between the home team and the visitors was scheduled for the Saturday, and preparations began early that morning. The match itself kicked off at 11am with Ballyclare racing into an early 3 try advantage. Once the American players had acclimatised to the windy conditions and worked off yet another cooked breakfast, they started to play a bit more rugby and enjoyed their fair share of possession and territory. The match was played in 4 quarters, allowing both sides to expose as many players as possible to new experiences. A final score of 31-17 ensured that the match was evenly contested and enjoyed by both sets of players and coaching staff.
On Saturday afternoon, the Maryland Exiles watched Ballyclare 2 XV play a home match, while their coaches were treated to Ballyclare 4s playing away to Rainey 4s. Both players and coaches thoroughly enjoyed their matches and were amazed by the facilities available at the club. The Exiles’ coach explained to organisers that in the USA, Rugby facilities are often very sparse and generally matches are played on grounds designed for other sports. As well as this, there are rarely any changing facilities available for teams.
The Exiles and their hosts spent Saturday evening at a Rock concert in Belfast, while their coaches enjoyed some local hospitality at a nearby restaurant. After the previous night’s fun, Sunday morning began with a visit to Church for an Easter Sunday service. On return, and after yet another Ulster fry and some rest, the players were taken for a training session by Ballyclare 1st Xv coaches, who introduced them to some continuity games and drills.
Everyone involved in the Exiles' visit thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the American visitors have already spoken about returning to Ireland on their next tour. Speaking after the occasion, Ulster Branch Community Rugby Development Officer, Alan Robinson said that hosting the American team had been a great honour for the club and a very positive experience for the Ulster Rugby community looking after guests from a foreign team.
