January Winner Lewis McCrabbe
Up-and-Coming Devenish College Boy Wins Vodafone Rugby Award

By Stacey Ferguson
Fourteen-year-old Lewis McCrabbe, a young rugby player from Devenish College in Enniskillen has won the the January award in the Vodafone Try Harder Rugby Awards for Schools. Both Lewis and his school receive sports voucher prizes from Vodafone.
Vodafone initiated the Try Harder Rugby Awards for Schools to underline its official partnership status with Ulster Rugby, to support Ulster Rugby’s work in the development of rugby at schools level and to reward the players who ‘Try Harder’ to improve their rugby skills and performance, something which Lewis’ coach, Trevor Whittaker, obviously thinks Lewis has done.

Lewis plays openside flanker for the U14s team at the school, though originally played prop, only transferring to flanker two years ago.  He enjoys his new position and takes great pleasure in getting in the tackles around the scrums and rucks.

Lewis also plays for the Enniskillen Rugby Club’s U16s – at second row – and won the U14s Ulster cup with the club last year, beating Ballynahinch in the final.

Lewis lives in Enniskillen with his parents Daphne and Colin and his two sisters, Holly and Rebecca, both of whom play hockey for their school – the Model in Enniskillen.  Lewis and his Dad also take an interest in football, keenly following the exploits of Manchester United.  Lewis plays football for Ballinamallard and also plays badminton.

Lewis takes an interest in the Ulster rugby team, watching their matches on television and has made a couple of visits to Ravenhill with the scouts.   His favourite player, not surprisingly, is Neil Best.

Back at school, Lewis’ best subjects are Home Economics, Business Studies and ICT and has an idea that he would like to go into some sort of business after school, perhaps in the property sector.

Vodafone invites schools that are affiliated to the IRFU Ulster Branch to nominate players for monthly awards on the basis of the effort they have put into their rugby training, playing the game and improving their skills.  Nominated players can be from any level of the game and do not have to be a member of a team playing in an official competition.  The winner of each month’s award and his school each receive sports vouchers from Vodafone.

Nominations for the final award – the March award - are now open and must be received by April 10th 2008.  Information on the Awards and nomination forms can be obtained by phoning Duffy Rafferty Communications on 9073 0880.
