Exclusive Interview with Andrew Trimble
22 February 2008, 3:31 pm
By Anne Perry
Ulster and Ireland centre Andrew Trimble spoke exclusively to www.ulsterrugby.com this morning, the interview was sent out to all the ezine subscribers first thing this morning and is now online for everyone to read....
Following on from Ireland's narrow defeat at Stade de France, Trimble is confident ahead of the side's upcoming fixture, drawing strength from the side's performance in France

"We have to be confident going into the next match" said Trimble "I think there were a lot of positives to take away from the last performance."

"A lot of people have talked about it being a game of two halves but I think we played relatively consistently throughout, it just didn't come together for us as well in the first half. Obviously we are not going to get carried away, we played some good rugby but we didn't manage the win, France were relentless throughout but we piled on the pressure right until the final whistle."

Trimble, who has been named in all three of Ireland's Six Nations starting line ups so far will be joined on Saturday by Ulster winger Tommy Bowe. It has been widely acknowledged that Bowe has been one of Ulster's most consistent forces over the last few months and the Monaghan man's efforts have been recognised with Eddie O'Sullivan saying earlier this week that he had really"...forced his way into the team."Trimble admits that he's 'delighted' to see his teammate back in the starting fold adding that "It is great news for Tommy he really deserves it."

Niall O'Connor was the newest addition to the Ireland senior training squad this week receiving his call up following an impressive performance at fly-half for Ulster last Friday with Setanta naming the 20 year old as their Man of the Match. "I spoke to Niall just after he found out,"said Trimble "he was really shocked and excited to join training."

"Training has gone well this week we had intensive training on Monday and Tuesday. We've been taking a while to look at the Scottish defense and developing our attacking patterns so we've cemented a game plan and have focused on that throughout the week.

On Wednesday we had a day off so a few of the players went to see Paddy Kielty's one man play in the Olympia Theatre which was really good. It's important not to burn yourself out before the match so it's good to get a day to relax but then it was straight back into training yesterday.

In Captain's Run today we'll go through everything we have worked on this week for a final time to make sure it's all coming together."

Having watched his Ulster teammates storm their way to a 38-13 victory at Ravenhill Andrew is confident that the team can continue to turn their season around under the guidance of new head coach Matt Williams,"I'm delighted with the win and hopefully it will set us up for the form to continue throughout the rest of the season. With Matt's arrival I think the team has really turned a corner and hopefully everyone's confidence will continue to grow. There are still a lot of games left to play so while the beginning of the season obviously didn't go to plan there's definitely time to turn it around!"
