Steve Williams Answers YOUR Questions!
29 November 2007, 2:17 pm
By Stacey Ferguson
www.ulsterrugby.com gave you the chance to submit your questions to Ulster Caretaker Coach Steve Williams and received many requests, please read on for some of the responses.
How have found life in Ulster since you moved over here in June?
Jayne Tomb

I’m really enjoying it and we’ve settled in very well as a family, we hope to stay here for quite a while.

Have you played with or against any of the current Ospreys players?
R Black

Yes there probably wouldn’t be many that I haven’t played with ( including some of the coaches- which shows my age)

How have you coped with all the pressure over the last few weeks?
S Drennan

At first I think we were all a bit reeling but you have to try and move forward as quickly as you can. In terms of pressure I don’t think that anyone could put more pressure on us than the pressure that we put on ourselves- everyone is their own harshest critic and in that respect most professional sportsmen and coaches are quite insular because you cant allow yourself to get caught up in other’s criticism or praise too much. Someone told me you cant choose to believe the all positive stuff written about you and just ignore the negative- there are thousands of people who come to watch Ulster play each week, each have their own opinions and are entitled to them but you cant get caught up in what’s going on around you because you need that focus for the task at hand.

Would you take the job of coach if it was offered to you? If and when a new coach accepts the job how do you see your future role?

I just hope to be involved with Ulster Rugby for the next few years in whatever capacity they want me to be.

Why are you not putting Justin Harrison on the squad?
PK Shields

The players I choose to start are chosen because of the attributes they have are suited to a particular game. For future matches the side that we need to send out will be different but at the minute the players selected have qualities that I think are needed for the task ahead.

Do you believe that your team or individual players could improve their performance potential through the involvement of certain aspects of judo in their training and which two current rugby rules would you like to change to improve the general safety of the game?
Terry Watt

Judo has come into the public knowledge more recently but there have always been certain aspects of it within rugby. The boys will do varying forms of wrestling and grappling as part of their training and conditioning and this is the case with most professional rugby teams.

I think at times the lineout can be one of the most dangerous places on he pitch, players will sometimes be 5 foot off the ground with their feet hooked under a teammates armpits- the littlest interference would be enough to cause serious injury so the rules surrounding this need to be strict.

If David Humphreys was fully fit would he be the first choice fly-half?
M Mckee

It would depend on how you were playing (David)! Haha
