CIYMS Host Strand Primary School

Last Thursday three P6 classes from Strand Primary School took some time out from class to visit CIYMS RFC, concluding their 6-week tag programme, which was delivered by Ulster Branch CRDO Brian O’Shaughnessy.  Pauline Maguire from Strand PS together with Brian O’Shaughnessy and Willie Latimer and Jimmy Stewart from CIYMS helped to organise the visit, which saw the kids playing some games of tag rugby.  Strand PS have no grass facilities for sport therefore this was a unique event for the kids and the glorious sunshine meant that a great morning was had by all.  50 kids in total took part, many of them girls and when the rugby was over, they were presented with Ulster Rugby posters as well as flyers from CIYMS RFC with details about the club. Thanks must be extended to CIYMS for hosting Strand PS, to the teachers of Strand PS for helping to organise the event and to Jarrett Truscott, Ulster Branch CRDO who helped referee the games.

U16 Blitz in Newry

Last week South Down CRDO Hamish Fraser organised a blitz at Newry Rugby Club.  St Pauls Bessbrook, Abbey Grammer & St Colmans competed and it is hoped that they will also take part in the upcoming Pollock Cup Subsidiary Tournament. All three schools are non traditional rugby playing schools but they have taken a keen interest in rugby and have already impressed on the field.  The scores from the blitz are as follows:  Abbey beat St Pauls 24-0, St Pauls beat St Colmans 10-5, & Abbey beat St Colmans 10-3. St Pauls entered the Pollock Cup last year, but this is the first time both the Abbey & St Colmans have had teams at U16 level.  If your school would like to get involved in rugby please contact your local development officer. Click here for details.
