Last Friday City of Derry RFC hosted a mini tag rugby world cup event as a celebration of an Innovative Primary Schools Tag Rugby Programme and to also mark the final of the Rugby World Cup taking place in Paris between South Africa and England.
The ‘Primary Schools Tag Rugby Programme’ which is part of the Derry City Councils “Active Citizenship Programme” had been running in 12 local primary schools over a period of 4 weeks prior to the finals day.
The Scheme was developed by Derry City Council Community Sports Development Officers in the Outer West and City Side Neighbourhood Renewal areas, in partnership with City of Derry Rugby Club, the Bogside & Brandywell Health Forum and IRFU Ulster Branch. Primary schools kids from Rosemount P.S., Model P.S., St Anne’s P.S., Holy Family P.S., St Eithne’s P.S., St Eugene’s P.S., Gaelschoil Eadain Mhoir (Irish Speaking School), Nazareth House, St John’s P.S., Longtower P.S. and Holy Child’s P.S. all taking parting in the finals day.

The scheme which was aimed at P5s from Non-Traditional Rugby Playing schools saw 250 kids take part in the finals day. For most of the kids this was the first time that any of them would have competed against other schools in any form of sport.

Commenting on the Tag Rugby Scheme Jonathan Quigley, Community Rugby Development Officer (IRFU Ulster Branch) said “All the boys and girls have had great fun learning rugby which is a new sport for most of them. They all enjoyed getting the ball in their hands and running with it, scoring as many tries as possible. There has been a lot of smiles and laughter during the scheme, all the signs that they are having a great time”.

This scheme promotes rugby at the grassroots level, which goes a long way in the promotion of rugby and sport in general.

Friday saw the culmination of weeks of hard work and training for the kids from each school as they played off against different schools and having fun while doing so.

The organiser of the event would like to thank all the schools for taking part in the scheme and for bringing the kids along on the finals day.
