The plans, which were submitted to the Planning Service two years ago in October 2005 will be subject to some conditions from the Planning authorities but all in all this is a very positive step in terms of developing the sport in Ulster
The passing of the plans had been delayed due to a number of objections from local residents, however Ulster Branch Officials have over the past two years attended a number of meetings with the Ulster Rugby Residents Association (URRA) in an attempt to allay and react to their concerns. Ulster Rugby has also put in place a number of initiatives in an effort to work with local residents such as providing information in flyer form regarding forthcoming matches, offering and promoting a free Park and Ride service all supporters to ease traffic congestion in the surrounding area, advising supporters through the match programme and tannoy system to be mindful of residents when entering and exiting the ground, putting in place additional stewarding at matches, and actively discouraging sponsors and partners from handing out promotional items and giveaways on match night outside the ground.
The planned redevelopment involves the construction of a new stand behind the old terrace as well as providing a roof for the existing terrace. Another stand is also planning at the car park end of the ground, which would house the teams’ changing room facilitates and another bar.
Michael Reid, CEO of Ulster Rugby said: "We are delighted that after the long period of time we have received council approval. And if we are to continue to develop the only full-time professional sport in Northern Ireland, an upgrade to the quality of facilities is absolutely essential."
Any updates regarding the redevelopment will be posted online at http://www.ulsterrugby.com/
