| The early stages of the game were evenly contested but it was Leinster who had the first opportunity to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty after 5 minutes, however centre Matt Keville missed and was again off target with another penalty attempt in the 14th minute.
The first points of the game came in the 21st minute when Keville finally converted another penalty opportunity.
However it didn’t take long for Ulster to respond and in the 26th minute Ulster Captain David Funston scored a try after some sustained pressure. Robin Thompson successfully converted to give Ulster a 7 – 3 lead. Just before half-time Ulster had an opportunity to extend their lead but Thompson pushed a penalty attempt just wide.
Leinster started the second half the better of the two teams and were rewarded for their efforts when Keville converted penalties in the 39th and 47th minute to give the home team a 9 – 7 lead.
Losing the lead seemed to kick-start the Ulster team and 5 Minutes later Thompson converted another penalty to put Ulster 10 – 9 ahead.
Ulster were then rewarded for their hard work when number 8 Michael Browne crashed over for a try in the 65th minute. Thompson converting to increase Ulster’s lead to 17 – 9.
Leinster however were not going to give up that easily and scored a try of their own in the 69th minute through their outhalf Ian McKinley which Keville converted to leave them trailing Ulster by a point.
Ulster though were not yet done and following a series of rucks on the Leinster line the ball was moved wide and Captain David Funston scored his 2nd try of the day in the corner. Robin Thompson converted from the touchline to leave the final score 24 – 16 to the men in white.
This was a deserved victory for Ulster and sets them up for the remainder of the inter-provincial series.
Ulster’s next game is against Connacht at Ravenhill on Saturday 8th September with an 11.30am Kick off.
