Rugby A Hit At Queens University Summer Scheme
8 August 2007, 4:35 pm
By Paula Gunn
Over 140 children aged between 6-14 years arrived at a rugby week which Queens PEC incorporated into their annual summer scheme.
The week was led by a rugby development officer with the helpful assistance from all the scheme leaders.  Fun and enjoyment were the items on the agenda, mixed in with a little skill and this proved evident in the finals day held on Friday.  To spice up the finals, each year group (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-14) were assigned into 4 different teams and with the Rugby World Cup coming up those teams were Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Ireland.  Each team had to wait to the very end of the day before they could find which country was the top team.  “Points meant prizes!” with all the games being played in a fast and open pace with lots of tries happening in each game.

When all the games were finished and the scores added up it was team Ireland that won, with Australia coming second and the All blacks with South Africa joint third.  The rugby fans hope this will be the same outcome in the autumn.

Talent prizes were awarded to the best girl and boy in each age group and were presented by Ulster Women’s Captain and Irish International Jess Limbert.  She was warmly welcomed by the children and leaders and a special thank you must go to her for taking the time out to come to present the awards.

This concluded the rugby week for another year in the Queens Summer scheme and all players thoroughly enjoyed the skills and games.  A big thank you must go to the PEC for inviting the development officers along to the scheme and also to the scheme leaders for their help and enthusiasm to keep the children enjoying each day.
