| In May last year, when Belfast was named as the host city for the 2007 IRB Under 19 World Championship, Ulster Branch Chief Executive Michael Reid promised it would be the best championship ever.
Arguably the biggest sporting event to ever be held in NI, the Ulster Branch were determined that the opportunity to host the tournament would create a lasting legacy through better facilities, youth development and volunteerism, and that we could showcase Belfast as a major player on the international sporting scene.
Without exception all the teams thoroughly enjoyed their stay in our country. The public embraced the tournament and its teams and the championship captured the imagination of the wider rugby community in the province.
None of it would have been possible without the help of our army of volunteers that assisted in the running of the championship.
Drivers, transport co-ordinators, receptionists, journalists, photographers, audio-journalists, data inputters, venue managers and assistants, PA announcers, catering staff, anti-doping chaperones, the list goes on.
Some had a rugby background, others had no particular club affiliation but all were 100% committed to the cause, giving freely of their time and carrying out their duties with unfailing good humour
You can feel proud that Dr Syd Millar described the Ireland 2007 tournament as the best ever, we couldn’t have done it without you.
Thank you
