Would you like to tell us a bit about yourself?
I am in my final year at RBAI, about to sit my A-levels. I have been involved in rugby from a young age and the sport has always been a passion of mine. I have played for a lot of teams at school but mainly for the 3rds.
How did you get into refereeing?
Every year the school encourages senior pupils who enjoy watching or playing rugby to do the schoolboy-refereeing course. I put my name down and enjoyed the six-week course as many others did and that’s were it all started from.
How have you found the schoolboy-refereeing course? Would you recommend it to others?
I really enjoyed the course and found it very interesting as I was watching and learning the game from a completely different perspective. I definitely recommend it to others.
Have you enjoyed your involvement in the U19 RWC to date?
It was a great experience to touch judge the Romania v Ballynahinch game as it put me under pressure. It was a good quality match that was taken seriously. I also enjoyed it because I learnt a lot, not only about touch judging but about refereeing as the talented Jonny Peak was refereeing it. I hope to enjoy and learn as much when I am touch judging Cook Islands v Ulster colleges just like I did from the Romania match.
Is there a match/refereeing moment that sticks out in your mind?
I refereed RBAI 3rds v Wellington College 1sts and really enjoyed it as it was a high quality match and very competitive. I felt I did a good job considering the conditions weren't good yet it was still a quick rugby match with good rugby being played.
What are your ambitions as a referee?
To get as far as I possibly can. Hopefully to International level some day.
Who is your most admired referee?
Alan Lewis/Chris White-both are perfect examples of how to referee high intensity matches, as they are firm, fair, decisive, consistent and very good positioning.
Favourite rugby player of all time?
Dan Carter.
