Tom Court who is a tighthead prop from Australia has signed a two-year contract with Ulster Rugby. Court (25) who is originally from Brisbane arrived in Belfast at the weekend.
Previously a top athlete, Court, who is Irish qualified for rugby, was one of the best shot-putters in Australia and is a relative newcomer to rugby union having begun playing the code whilst studying at the University of Queensland three years ago. From there he was invited to join the Queensland Reds rugby academy, and has since played for Queensland A and NPC side Manawatu before returning to Australia to feature in the Queensland Reds Super 14 squad earlier this season.

Ulsterrugby.com caught up with Tom when he visited Ravenhill for the first time this morning.

So Tom, what are you first impressions of Northern Ireland?

Since I landed on Saturday everyone has been really friendly and welcoming. I have been staying with Justin Harrison who is being fantastic; he is really helping me settle in and show me the ropes.

Have you had an Ulster Fry or a pint of Guinness yet?

I haven’t had an Ulster Fry yet, but I am really looking forward to trying one! I am not really a big drinker so I don’t expect I will like Guinness but I will certainly try it!

How did your family feel about you coming over to Northern Ireland?

They are absolutely over the moon; all my family originate from Co Mayo. My Grandfather was born in Limerick and my Aunt and Uncle are currently living in Dublin. I backpacked around Ireland a few summers ago and really enjoyed it, everyone is so friendly and the scenery is beautiful. I hope to be able to see more of the West Coast and visit Dublin again.

You are quite new to Rugby; tell me how you got involved?

I started throwing the Shot Put when I was about 5 and had been competing at a high standard for a number of years and was Australian University Champion for three years running and had Olympic trials in 2002. However a few years ago I was quite overweight and needed to do something to lose some weight and get in shape. I had never followed rugby or played but I thought it would be something different. I took to it very quickly and really started to enjoy it, so that made me train harder! Since I started playing I haven’t really looked back.

What do you think the difference is between the Southern and Northern hemisphere rugby?

I think Southern Hemisphere rugby is all about the backs and it is a fast and a very wide game. From what I have seen of Northern Hemisphere rugby it is much more of a physical game and a there is a higher level of intensity. I am very excited about playing in northern hemisphere; I think it might suit my game more!

What do you think you can bring to Ulster Rugby?

Apart from an Australian sense of humour hopefully quite a lot! I am quite different from the traditional prop as I am quick and mobile and as I have only been playing rugby a couple of years I have no bad back and neck problems yet. Also because I have only been playing a few years I am still very enthusiastic and keen to learn and hopefully haven’t picked up too many bad habits yet! I am really excited to be here and looking forward to the Cardiff game on Friday night, I have heard a lot about the Ravenhill atmosphere!
