Coca Cola Tag Rugby Extravaganzas
5 April 2006, 3:57 pm
By Anne Perry
Following a series of qualifying tournaments throughout Ulster, 64 primary schools were invited to one of two Tag Rugby Extravaganzas that were held in Omagh and in Belfast.
At both tournaments primary schools dressed up as famous rugby countries to take part in a Parade of Nations prior to the games beginning.  The costumes on both days were outstanding and credit should be given to teachers, parents and pupils for the effort that went in to ensuring that the judges had a difficult job in selecting a ‘Best Dressed Country’ on each day.

In Omagh, Killen Primary School won the Best Dressed Award when they turned up as Samoan Warriors even taking time to learn the Samoan version of the ‘Haka’ that they performed at every opportunity!!!

In Belfast, Ballynahinch Primary School, who were representing Italy, took the award dressed as Roman Gladiators complete with laurel leaves, togas and swords!!

In keeping with the ethos of Tag Rugby, primary schools on each day competed for the Most Skilful Team and Most Sporting Team.  In both Omagh and Belfast those present were treated to exceptional displays of Tag Rugby with lots of tries being scored and plenty of evidence that the children had been working hard with their teachers in the run up to the finals

In Omagh the ‘Fair Play’ award was won by Niall Mor National School from Glenties in Co Donegal whilst the ‘Most Skilful’ team was awarded to Ballykelly Primary School from Limavady.

In Belfast the ‘Fair Play award was won by Ballyclare Primary School whilst Moorefields Primary School from Kells in Co Antrim won the ‘Most Skilful’ prize.

The IRFU (Ulster Branch) would like to thank all of the schools that competed, as well as Youth Sport Omagh and Queens University for hosting the extravaganzas.  Also a big thank you to Coca Cola for their continued support of the Tag Rugby scheme and to all of the Development Officers who delivered Tag Rugby within the schools, as well as organising, running and referring the Extravaganzas.
