Down High School are Northern Bank Schools' Trophy Champions
The first of the Northern Bank sponsored Schools' finals took place at Ravenhill on Monday 6th March when Down HS and Lurgan College contested the Schools' Trophy final. The game was played in perfect conditions with a sizeable crowd of supporters from both schools in attendance.
Down HS opened the scoring after 7 minutes when open side flanker Thomas Turner went over for a well taken score which was converted by out half Owen Herron to give them a 7-0 lead.
After 15 minutes Lurgan came close to scoring when an interception by Chris Walmsley saw him get close to the Down HS line and only good work from full back Tommy Seymour saved the day when he held Walmsley up.
After 29 minutes Lurgan scored when second row David Peoples gathered the ball after out half Nick Mc Collum had shown great vision with a perfectly placed cross field kick. Unfortunately for Lurgan College, Mc Collum missed with the conversion.
Down HS increased their lead when prop Chris Hughes barged his way over to give Down a 12-5 lead. This lead was further increased in injury time at the end of the first half when High School winger Matthew Norton finished of a good period of play with a well taken score. Heron missed the conversion but Down were looking comfortable with their 17-5 half time lead.
In the second half Lurgan seemed to have no reply for the pace and power of the Down HS team.
Seven minutes after the restart winger Callem Stewart increased their lead with an unconverted try and this was followed two minutes later when flanker Thomas Stewart scored his second try. This was converted by Heron to increase the Down HS lead to 29-5.
After 18 minutes centre Jack Clemments got his name on the score sheet with a try converted by Owen Herron and shortly after this a second Clemments try again converted by Heron really put the game out of sight.
Despite a late Lurgan rally it was Down HS who had the last say when in injury time, Man of the Match, Thomas Turner completed his hat trick with a try converted by Owen Herron to leave Down HS comfortable 48-5 winners of the Schools' Trophy competition.
