| In the Northern Bank Schools' Trophy competition, one semi-final is postponed due to waterlogged pitches while Lurgan College defeat Wellington College by one point to book their final place. |
In the semi finals of the Northern Bank Ulster Schools' Trophy competition Omagh Academy and Down HS had their game postpone due to waterlogged piches in Omagh. This game is due to be replayed on Wednesday 22nd February.
In the second semi final Lurgan College travelled to play Wellington College and had to rely on a last minute penalty to win a match which was dominated by the windy conditions for long periods.
The visitors took the lead with a Karl Cullen try which was converted by Nick Mc Collum. This spurred the home side into action and they came storming back with a try and a goal just before half time to give them a 12-7 lead.
Lurgan played into the wind in the second half and got their game together. Another well struck McCollum penalty reduced the deficit to 12-10. Towards the end of the game Lurgan pressure saw them on the attack and almost certain to score when a Wellington player gave away a delberate knock on. From the resultant penalty, Mc Collum kept a cool head to slot the kick over to put the visitors 12-13 ahead. The last few minutes of injury time seemed like an eternity for the visitors who were mightedly relieved to hear the final whistle.
Disappointment for the much improved Wellington team but delight for the Lurgan team who now prepare for their third Trophy final. This final is due to take place at Ravenhioll on Monday 6th March.
