| Despite leading 16 - 9 at half-time, a second half which saw the Dragons score two tries, a conversion and two penalties, sees Alan Solomons' side on the wrong end of a 27 - 19 scoreline at Rodney Parade.
Ulster prop Robbie Kempson was binned early in the game for punching the Dragons' No. 8 Shawn Van Rensberg and Percy Montgomery duly slotted over the penalty to open the scoring on 8 minutes.
Two more Montgomery penalties to one from Ulster's David Humphreys made the score 9 - 3 to the Dragons but then Ulster No. 8 Roger Wilson crossed the try-line with Humphreys conversion giving Ulster the lead for the first time in the game. Dragons 9 - 10 Ulster.
Humphreys added two more penalties before the half-time whistle to stretch Ulster's lead to 7 points.
Half-time Score: Dragons 9 - 16 Ulster
Montgomery started the second period as he did the first, notching up three points from a penalty on 46 minutes, having hit the post on an attempt two minutes earlier.
David Humphreys replied with a penalty for Ulster on 48 minutes, but on 64 minutes Dragons' replacement Lee Jarvis touched down for a try to close the gap. Montgomery failed to convert. Dragons 17 - 19 Ulster
Montgomery missed a penalty on 70 minutes but made amends 4 minutes later to put the Dragons ahead for the first time since mid way through the first half. Dragons 20 - 19 Ulster
Humphreys missed a crucial penalty on 76 minutes and any Ulster hopes of salvaging the win, or a bonus point for losing by less than 7 points, were dashed when Dragons' Michael Owen crossed the line from a quick penalty leaving Montgomery with an easy conversion for the maximum seven points.
Final Score: Dragons 27 - 19 Ulster
It's tight at the top with the Dragons now leading the Celtic League table on 44 points and Ulster in second place on 43 points. The Celtic Warriors are in third position, also on 43 points, but Ulster just edge them out of the second spot on points scored. Llanelli are in fourth place on 42 points.
